Fish are a key aspect in Dave the Diver.
The player can catch fish with the harpoon or by dealing damage with a weapon. Depending on the size or type of fish, they may require special equipment and methods to catch.
Most small fish are instantly transferred to the player's inventory when successfully caught with a harpoon. Fish killed or stunned with a weapon or elemental damage will instead need to be approached, with smaller fish being automatically picked up. Larger fish will typically require the player to either turn the fish into cuts or to have it picked up by the drone.
The method of capture determines the quality of the fish once captured, and as such, how much meat they give. There are three tiers, each represented by a star rating.
- ★ Fish is dead. Gives the fewest portions.
- ★★ Fish was caught alive using harpoon. Gives a medium number of portions.
- ★★★ Fish was caught alive without the harpoon. Gives a large number of portions.
Large fish do not have a ★ rating, however, they still have 3 different meat values they can provide depending on how they are handled:
- ★★ Fish is dead and is cut up underwater using a knife. Will provide 10 portions of meat.
- ★★ Fish is dead and is picked up by the drone. Will provide 15 portions of meat.
- ★★★ Fish is alive and is picked up by a drone. Will provide 27 portions of meat.
Note that it is not possible to cheat the amount for large dead fish by first cutting out 1 chunk and then picking up the rest with a drone. As then Dave will extract 5 portions while the rest picked up by the drone will only provide 10 more portions.
A ★★★ rating is normally only possible by sedating a fish with a tranquilizing weapon or entangling them in a net. Neither method will work on every fish, however, sedation is usually the better option as it will not work only on fish that are immune to weapons, while there are many fish that are too big to catch in a net. Some fish, however, will always be a ★★★ rating, most notably those that are caught with the bug net like seahorses.
